MERIDIAN, Miss. – Country Music Hall of Fame member and Mississippi native Charley Pride, was honored with another industry accolade recently, celebrating his legendary career as a pioneering Country musician. Pride was inducted into the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience Hall of Fame class of 2018, on August 25th in Meridian, Mississippi, along with four other recipients; singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, Photographer William Eggleston, Writer and editor Willie Morris, and Blues musician Howlin’ Wolf. Pride also received a ‘Walk of Fame’ star as part of the ceremony.
“I’m very humbled to be part of this Hall of Fame class along with these other accomplished Mississippians,” said Pride. “This honor means a lot to me because it comes from my home state. I am so proud to be from Mississippi!”
Charley Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi to a sharecropping family, and was raised from humble roots on a farm. Pride’s love of country music was fostered by Grand Ole Opry broadcasts on WSM radio. He saved money for almost a year to purchase his first guitar at age 14 – a Silvertone model from Sears & Roebuck.
In 1966, Pride was signed by Chet Atkins to RCA Records, where his gritty, Southern-accented baritone voice made him a superstar. Pride has received three Grammys, three Country Music Association awards, an Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry inductions and a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.
His 52 top-10 hits include “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” “Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town,” “Burgers and Fries,” “Roll On Mississippi” and others.
The eighteen other Mississippi artists inducted into the Hall are: painter Walter Inglis Anderson, writer William Faulkner, actor Morgan Freeman, writer John Grisham, puppeteer Jim Henson, bluesman Robert Johnson, actor James Earl Jones, bluesman B.B.King, potter George Ohr, entertainer Elvis Presley, opera singer Leontyne Price, musician Jimmie Rodgers, bluesman Muddy Waters, actor Sela Ward, writer Eudora Welty, playwright Tennessee Williams, Entertainer Oprah Winfrey, and writer Richard Wright.

FORT WORTH, Texas – In 1989, Billy Bob’s Texas began a tradition of enshrining those entertainers who sold out the award-winning “Night Club of the Year” by having the celebrity dip their hands in a concrete slab along with adding their signature. Since that time, some of the biggest names in Country Music have done the same, from Dottie West, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, and Randy Travis to Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, Luke Combs, Cole Swindell, and now – Midland!
“Hands down, it is one of our biggest honors to be included with such a heralded group of legends. We’re simply flattered and humbled to be joining this fabled wall. Billy Bob’s will always feel like we’re coming home. Thank you.” – Midland
“These handprints are something very special for us here at Billy Bob’s,” says VP of Marketing Pam Minick. “They really serve two purposes, one honoring those who made an impact on entertainment and secondly, it’s fun for our visitors to see how their hands match up to the hands of their favorite celebrity.”
In addition to Country Music stars, Billy Bob’s Texas has honored Ringo Starr, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, The Monkees, Billy Bob Thornton, Cheap Trick, Heart, Huey Lewis, BB King, Bret Michaels, Buddy Guy, The Temptations, and several more. Of special note, Darius Rucker has two sets of hand prints, why? Well, one for this stellar performance as a solo country artist and two, as the lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish.
“These handprints have also become something fun for the artists. For instance, Tanya Tucker included her dog’s paw prints. Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel put his boot prints instead of his hand prints. Deana Carter went barefoot. So we have really strived to make this a fun experience for those we decide to include in the program,” add Minick.
Trivia question: Who has the most hand prints on the wall? It’s an artist in Country Music that has had a solo career, was in a duo, and also was in a band.
Answer: John Rich – he has 3 hand prints on the wall, one as John Rich, one as part of Big & Rich, and one as a member of Lonestar.

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Legendary American singer, songwriter and performer Don McLean recently helped raise funds for Teen Cancer America (TCA) and UCLA Health. At the Backyard Concert 2018, McLean joined Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Van Morrison and Roger Daltrey, as well as GRAMMY Award winner Ed Sheeran and others for a once-in-a-generation private concert and live auction. During the concert Don McLean joined Sheeran for a special duet performance of his hit “Vincent”.
“I have been aware of the philanthropic work of Roger Daltrey for many years, and that motivated me to participate,” said McLean. “I enjoyed all the music very much, and Ed Sheeran is very delightful to know and work with. Van Morrison put on a beautiful, swinging show and his band was very refined. Everyone gave their best, and it was a stellar musical evening that raised money for a good cause.”
WATCH: Ed Sheeran & Don McLean rehearsal of “Vincent”
The invite-only event, the fifth in a series that began a decade ago to raise awareness and funds for UCLA Health’s Autism program, launched the Daltrey-Townshend Teen and Young Adult Cancer Program at UCLA and spearheaded the establishment of Teen Cancer America.
Judd Apatow served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Howie Mandel as auctioneer for the live auction of a rare collection of music memorabilia and art that was auctioned off throughout the evening. Included in the auction lot was a guitar donated by The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation that experts are saying may be the most valuable ever built for a charity event. The handcrafted guitar, inspired by the Holly classic song, “Learning The Game,” is signed by 75 of the greatest living musicians including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Brian May, Bruce Springsteen, Don McLean, Donovan, Brian Wilson, Keith Richards, Dion, Peter Frampton, Graham Nash, Don Everly and Elvis Costello, just to name a few. Peter Bradley Jr. of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation has spent the last 18 months traveling the world capturing the signatures and stories about how Holly inspired other artists, in preparation for donating the guitar to Teen Cancer America as part of a newly established partnership between the two organizations.
Other auction items included a mechanically and electrically refurbished Bally Pinball Wizard Machine built in 1975 to coincide with the release of the movie/rock opera “Tommy.” It was autographed for the event by most of the stars of the film, including Daltrey, Townsend, Elton John, Tina Turner, Jack Nicholson, and Ann-Margret. Additional auction items included a first off the production line, limited edition The Who motorized scooter and high-value art from famed contemporary street-artist RETNA. The auction was being conducted live, and online at www.ha.com, by Heritage Auctions.
The first four Backyard Concert events raised close to $10 million, with event expenses totaling less than 10 percent of the funds raised. Friday’s concert and auction raised over $3.5 Million for the charities.
Backyard Concert continues to build on this momentum to provide transformative care of kids, teens, young adults and families impacted by the frightening diagnosis of cancer or autism. Support from the event funds a multitude of programs, services and resources provided by both UCLA Health and Teen Cancer America for these young patients. If you would like to make a donation in support of this great cause, please contact Carmen Garcia at 310-255-7721.
Key 2018 event sponsors included Douglas Emmett, Merrill Lynch Private Banking & Investment Group, Eastdil Secured, AEG, Eloise & J.P. DeJoria, Goldenvoice, ABM Parking Services and Patron Tequila.
