Throughout his expansive career, international country music icon Lee Greenwood has earned multiple CMA and ACM Awards, a Grammy Award for Male Country Vocal Performance for “I.O.U.,” and numerous other prestigious award nominations. His extensive discography includes twenty-two studio albums, seven compilation albums, seven No. 1 hits, and thirty-eight singles, including “It Turns Me Inside Out,” “Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands,” “She’s Lyin’,” “I Don’t Mind the Thorns (If You’re the Rose),” “Dixie Road,” “Somebody’s Gonna Love You,” “Going, Going, Gone,” and “You Got a Good Love Comin’,” among others.
Greenwood’s signature song, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” has become one of the most enduring patriotic anthems in American music. The song has reached the Top 5 on the country singles charts three separate times—in 1991, 2001, and 2003—giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, “God Bless the U.S.A.” also reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s remarkable longevity has continued across generations, remaining an enduring part of Greenwood’s legacy.
Known for his lifelong patriotism and steadfast support of America’s military members, veterans, and their families, Greenwood has entertained U.S. troops on more than 30 USO Tours around the world. His service and advocacy have been recognized with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s National Patriot’s Award, among numerous other honors.
Greenwood’s public service has extended beyond music. In 2008, President George W. Bush appointed him to the National Council on the Arts, where he continued serving through the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump and into the administration of President Joe Biden. President Donald Trump also appointed Greenwood to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, where he continues to serve.
